Youth Work in Trades Scholarship
Once you have met all Youth Work in Trades (YWIT) program requirements, you are eligible to apply for a $1000 scholarship towards the cost of trades training. To be eligible, you must have:
- Completed a minimum of 900 hours of work-based training under the supervision of a Journeyperson or Red Seal Tradesperson (up to a year and a half after graduation to complete hours)
- Completed all four Youth Work in Trades courses by August 31 of the year you graduate - paperwork packages from your school Trades and Transitions (TNT) coordinator
- Graduated with a C+ average on all grade 12 courses
If you have met the requirements, you are eligible to apply for the YWIT scholarship. The application window is open from the beginning for September to early November each year. First you will need to gather some information for your application.
- Program start date - ask your school TNT coordinator
- Your SkilledTradesBC ID number and date of registration
- Personal information like legal name, date of birth, and address
- A statement of financial need which will be used to determine recipients if there are more than 600 applicants in a single year:
- Annual income from the previous year
- Training program expenses such as tuition, fees, books, PPE, tools, other expenses (e.g. rent, food, parking fees, and so on). This information is generally available from your post-secondary institution. For example, TRU Heavy Duty program cost information can be found here: https://www.tru.ca/trades/trades-programs/heavy-duty-equipment-technician.html#apprenticeship
Once you have gathered the above information, go to the BC Ministry of Education and complete the online application: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/education-training/k-12/support/career-programs/wrk-scholarship
Applications will be reviewed by SkilledTradesBC and the Ministry of Education. If fewer than 600 qualified people apply, all will be awarded the scholarship. If more than 600 qualified people apply, the financial summary in your application will be used to determine those with the highest financial need. Applicants will be notified of their scholarship status and given instructions regarding the redemption of the scholarship.
If you require help or have additional questions, please contact your school TNT coordinator or email the District Trades and Transitions office.
