YOUTH TRAIN IN TRADES - Accuplacer Information

You have applied, now what?

If you are in grade 11, you must complete the ACCUPLACER test by Feb. 5, 2026.

Grade 10 students applying to participate in a YTIT or Power Engineering program in their grade 12 year will write the Accuplacer test in their grade 11 year by the February 2027 deadline.

What is the Accuplacer?

  • In order to be accepted into the Youth Train in Trades or Power Engineering program, a placement test, called the Accuplacer, must be written with Thompson Rivers University (TRU).
  • The Accuplacer is an integrated system of computer-adaptive assessments designed to evaluate students’ skills in reading, writing and mathematics. Students will write certain sections of the Accuplacer depending on the trade chosen (see ACCUPLACER Score Requirements for sections written for each trade and scores needed to pass).
  • Should a student fail a required section, they only re-write the failed section, not the entire Accuplacer.

When does the Accuplacer take place and how do I register?

  • Testing sessions take place every Wednesday morning at 9:00 am at TRU in Kamloops. Students may also request to write the test virtually.
  • Schedule an appointment to write the Accuplacer through the Assessment Centre by phone (250-828-5470), email: assess@tru.ca  or online: Accuplacer Registration
  • You must bring picture ID to your scheduled appointment.
  • Results will be forwarded to Academic Advising and TRU Trades Partnership Coordinator within one week and shared with the student.
  • Scores are valid for one year.
  • Cost to write: $40.95 (includes GST)
