Indigenous Trades Exploration

Aboriginal Trades Exploration

This two day Trades Exploration is for indigenous students in grade 10-12 who are interested in learning about a career in the trades. Students will explore trades opportunities through the lens of indigenous culture, working with indigenous TRU Red Seal Instructors and community members.  For example, students will explore the use of hand tools as they work with a local carver to create their own paddle.

The event will be infused with celebrations of indigenous culture, and supports for students to move toward post-secondary.  Each day will begin with a gathering, welcome, prayers and drumming.  Each day will be a “lunch and learn” with guests such as local Band Education Coordinators, TRU’s elders and TRU’s Indigenous Future Students Department (recruiting).  Lunch meeting will help students understand and engage in their next steps toward post secondary opportunities and funding.  The event will close with a celebration event: lunch on the land and paddling together with the student created paddles.
